Carmelo Anthony details why he rejected NBA contracts

Carmelo Anthony turned down opportunities to extend his NBA career because he was unwilling to accept the limited roles teams were offering him.

The 10-time NBA All-Star explained that he had discussions with several organizations but ultimately decided not to sign, believing he was still capable of making a meaningful contribution on the court.

“I told a couple teams, I just I can’t do that.”

Anthony also considered the expectations of fans who had supported him throughout his career. He felt that accepting a significantly reduced role would not reflect what he could still offer as a player.

“And I won’t disrespect you guys with that, with the fan base. You know, the fans chant ‘We want Melo’, like…”

The former New York Knicks star maintained that his decision was not about refusing to play basketball, but rather about the type of role he was being asked to accept.

“To take that position, I didn’t want [it], ’cause I know I can still play.”

Anthony acknowledged the frustration of believing he could still compete while NBA teams appeared to have a different assessment of his abilities.

“When you can still play the game, bro, but they trying to tell you can’t play no more. Like, what?”

However, he also expressed respect for veteran players who choose to remain in the league by accepting smaller roles.

“So that’s why I did, man. So shout out to guys who are in that position who accept that position, because that is a real role on the team.”

Anthony last played for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-22 season before officially retiring in May 2023.

The former scoring champion finished his 19-year NBA career with 28,289 points and 10 All-Star selections.
