Golden State Warriors guard Brandon Williams revealed that having former high school teammate De’Anthony Melton on the roster played an important role in his decision to join the franchise during free agency.
Speaking on the Dubs Talk podcast, Williams explained that he had been discussing his free agency options with Melton before the possibility of signing with Golden State became serious.
The two players have known each other since high school and maintained a close relationship throughout their basketball careers.
With Melton already playing for the Warriors, Williams had someone familiar to turn to while considering his next move.
“It’s crazy, I was telling him about how I should go through free agency and what I should expect,” Williams said.
“But we didn’t know that it was going to happen. Because we played a game every day, we talked probably too much. But I want to say the second week of free agency. That’s when I started to get a good glimpse.
“I didn’t tell him initially when I got the call. But a couple of days later, when I started to feel like it was going to happen, I’m like, ‘Hey bro, it might happen.’ It was kind of cool.”
