Patrick Dumont backs Masai Ujiri amid Mavericks changes

Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont has expressed confidence in team president Masai Ujiri following a series of significant changes within the franchise’s basketball operations.

Dumont, who has faced criticism from fans since approving the February 2025 trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, has overseen several major organizational decisions.

The Mavericks dismissed general manager Nico Harrison last November before hiring Ujiri as team president in May.

Dumont made it clear that Ujiri now has the authority to lead the organization’s basketball decisions.

“This is Masai Ujiri’s team,” said Dumont. “He’s got a ring. He knows what he’s doing.”

Ujiri, who helped build the Toronto Raptors team that won the 2019 NBA championship, has already made substantial changes in Dallas.

The Mavericks replaced longtime head coach Jason Kidd with Dusty May and appointed Mike Schmitz as general manager.

The moves represent a new direction for the franchise following the controversial Doncic trade, which generated widespread criticism from Dallas supporters.

Meanwhile, former majority owner Mark Cuban has publicly expressed frustration over his reduced involvement in the organization.

Despite those disagreements, Dumont maintained that he continues to have a positive relationship with Cuban.

“I just have to tell you: I love Mark. He’s been a great family friend for a really long time. He’s just a super passionate Mavs fan and he’s frustrated. I respect it.”
