JJ Redick highlights Luka Doncic’s defensive transformation

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised Luka Doncic’s defensive commitment and offensive influence after the Slovenian star recorded 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and five steals in Sunday’s 131-125 win over the Toronto Raptors.

Redick described Doncic’s recent performances as both extraordinary and increasingly familiar, highlighting his ability to create advantages against double teams and involve teammates.

“It feels like a supernova, but it also feels normal,” Redick said of Doncic’s offensive production.

Doncic scored at least 37 points for the fourth consecutive game, making eight three-pointers against Toronto. Redick said the Lakers still need to improve their response when opponents send two defenders at the ball, noting that players passed up four open three-point attempts in the second half.

“When you get an advantage, you got to keep the advantage and shoot it,” Redick said.

The coach also highlighted Doncic’s defensive work. The 45-point performance included five steals, 15 rebounds and several charges drawn, while Redick praised his communication and ability to contain opponents on the ball.

“He’s been awesome on defense,” Redick said.

Doncic’s 15 defensive rebounds stood out to the Lakers coach, who said the guard was also helping teammates through his communication. Redick added that the team regularly reviews defensive clips to reinforce those contributions.

Redick also addressed the Lakers’ late-game struggles after Toronto cut a 26-point deficit to five in the closing minutes. He said the team played 44 strong minutes but criticized the officiating and physical defensive tactics that contributed to some of the 24 turnovers.

The coach defended his decision to leave players in the game until the final buzzer, saying the closing stretch was an opportunity for them to learn to finish games.

Toronto scored 11 points in 40 seconds after the Lakers removed their starters, forcing Doncic, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler to return.

Redick also credited the Lakers’ bench for its response after Friday’s loss to Golden State. He pointed to the offensive contributions of Sandro Mamukelashvili, Collin Sexton and other reserves, saying the group had provided important stretches throughout the early season.

The Lakers improved to 5-2 and will host the Miami Heat on Monday night.
