The Atlanta Hawks will exercise their rookie-scale team option on Asa Newell for the 2027-28 season, worth $3.56 million, Michael Scotto reported on Sunday, November 1.
Newell is under a four-year, $16.2 million rookie-scale contract with team options for the third and fourth seasons. Exercising the option will keep the 21-year-old forward under contract through the 2027-28 campaign.
Newell appeared in 44 games during his rookie season in 2025-26, averaging 5.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11.4 minutes. He shot 53.8% from the field and 38.7% from three-point range, while making two starts.
The forward has appeared in three games this season, averaging 5.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in 9.3 minutes. He is shooting 46.2% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc, with 5.3 points per game.
Newell has played a limited role in Atlanta’s 2026-27 rotation, with no starts through the team’s first seven games. Jalen Johnson leads the Hawks in minutes at 32.6 per game, while Onyeka Okongwu averages 28.1.
Atlanta selected Newell with the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The option decision gives the Hawks another season of contractual control over the forward as he continues developing within the team’s roster.
