NBA legends Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley have raised concerns about the Miami Heat’s offensive approach, arguing that the team relies too heavily on Giannis Antetokounmpo when games become difficult.
During a discussion about Miami, the two former NBA stars emphasized the importance of improving ball movement and involving more players in the offense.
They suggested that the Heat often become predictable when they face adversity, with teammates standing around while Antetokounmpo handles the ball and attempts to create scoring opportunities.
“When times get hard, they just get the ball to Giannis, and everybody just waiting around. They have to have continuous ball movement, everybody touching the ball. Giannis is gonna have to sometime be a little bit more unselfish.”
The criticism focused on Miami’s need to develop a more balanced offensive system rather than depending on Antetokounmpo to carry the majority of the responsibility.
Barkley also defended Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, arguing that the team’s offensive issues should not be blamed on the veteran coach.
Instead, he believes Antetokounmpo must adjust his playing style and become more willing to trust his teammates.
“It has nothing to do with Spo. Giannis is the one who ought to take a step back … the player has to accept, you know what? I’m not gonna play like I played in Milwaukee. I’m gonna trust Bam. I’m gonna trust Davion. Giannis can’t be stubborn. He’s got to get off the ball.”
