Former NBA center DeMarcus Cousins thinks Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo should not be considered a natural scorer despite his impressive offensive performances.
Cousins acknowledged Adebayo’s talent but argued that his 83-point game has created unrealistic expectations about his offensive abilities.
According to the former All-Star, one exceptional scoring performance should not determine how a player is evaluated.
“I think Bam is highly talent. You put the 83 point game aside, it hasn’t been many of those nights. That’s not knock to him but for me, I think we put him in a category because of that game that he doesn’t necessarily belong in as a scorer. Can he score? Yes. Is he a scorer? I don’t think he is.”
Cousins made a distinction between players who are capable of scoring and those whose games are primarily built around consistently producing points.
While he recognizes Adebayo’s offensive skills, Cousins believes the Heat big man still has areas to improve if he wants to become a more reliable scoring option.
The former Sacramento Kings star also suggested that Adebayo could benefit from studying Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis, particularly his shooting preparation and offensive positioning.
“Bam… Go lock in with BP, watch film and whatever BP is doing in his workouts, those are the same shots you need to be taking. The same spots you need to be working on.”
