Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic criticized the team’s home supporters after some fans booed during Saturday’s 141-135 overtime victory over the New Orleans Pelicans at Ball Arena.
The Nuggets struggled early in their home opener, falling behind by as many as 23 points.
With Denver trailing 45-26 in the second quarter, frustrated fans began booing the team.
Despite eventually completing a dramatic comeback, Jokic remained unhappy with the crowd’s reaction and questioned the loyalty of those who had criticized the players.
“We get booed in the first home game,” Jokic told reporters after the Nuggets’ first victory of the season.
“I think those fans who booed us, they don’t need to come anymore. Because if you guys follow us, you know that we never quit. And we came back from much worse or similar situations.
“If they ask me, they are not welcome anymore.”
The three-time NBA MVP ultimately led the Nuggets to their first victory of the season, finishing with 35 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists.
Although the crowd celebrated Denver’s comeback, Jokic made it clear that he had not forgotten the negative reaction earlier in the game.
