Walker Kessler is preparing to make his regular-season debut with the Los Angeles Lakers after a lengthy absence from NBA action, embracing the opportunity to play for one of the league’s most storied franchises.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s season opener against the Golden State Warriors, the new Lakers center acknowledged that nerves could be part of his return but said he was eager to get back on the court.
“I couldn’t tell you, I haven’t played yet,” Kessler said when asked what it would feel like to return. “I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun. I think there’s gonna be a lot of nerves going into the game. But as soon as the whistle blows and the ball, I think the rest of it will take care of itself.”
Kessler, who joined Los Angeles in a sign-and-trade with Utah during the offseason, said rebuilding his rhythm would take time and game repetitions.
“Obviously getting back in the rhythm is gonna be big for me, but it comes with reps,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to the opportunity and just to play again.”
The center also discussed the expectations that come with wearing a Lakers uniform. Rather than focusing on the pressure, Kessler said he prefers to view his arrival as a chance to compete for a franchise with a rich history.
“I’m just so grateful to be a part of this organization and be a chance to compete for an organization that has the history that it does,” he said.

Kessler expects the Lakers’ new-look roster to need time to develop, but he believes its competitive mentality provides a strong foundation.
“I think one thing has been solidified is that we’re going to compete our tails off, go out there, beat every night, try to win,” Kessler said. “Because of that, we’ve got a lot to learn, but with that mentality and that baseline, I think we’ve got the sky’s the limit.”
He pointed to the intensity of practices and the competitiveness of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves as factors shaping the team’s approach. Kessler praised both players’ court vision, describing their ability to anticipate plays as exceptional.
“So what I’ve learned is that always have your hands up and be ready to catch a ball, honestly,” he said.
Kessler also praised veteran teammate Kevon Looney for his championship experience and willingness to advise younger players. Asked about his own individual goals, the center kept his answer simple.
“I just want to win,” Kessler said. “Individually I want to win, which in turn, the team will win.”
The Lakers host Golden State on Wednesday to begin their 2026-27 regular season.
