Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has addressed his leadership role, the team’s chemistry and his physical condition as the franchise prepares for the 2026-27 NBA regular season.
Following Monday’s practice, the Slovenian guard discussed the challenges of integrating new players into the Lakers’ rotation and establishing consistency with a revamped roster.
Asked whether his approach to leadership has changed since his time with Real Madrid and the Dallas Mavericks, Doncic suggested that his teammates would be better positioned to evaluate his development.
“I think that’s the question for other people, how this team sees a leader,” he underlined. “I’m just my own leader. Like I’ve said, I’ve been in these situations a lot, but I think I’m doing a great job with this group.”
The Lakers enter the season with several new faces, meaning their key players will need time to become familiar with one another on the court.
However, Doncic declined to predict how long the adjustment process might take, emphasizing the uncertainty that comes with the beginning of a new campaign.
“I don’t know how much patience is going to be needed,” he admitted. “Just the start of a new season, a lot of new guys, but I can’t see in the future, so I don’t know how much patience we’re going to need.”

Another important development for Los Angeles is Doncic’s health after an injury brought his previous season to an early end.
The 27-year-old confirmed that he is healthy and ready to return to regular-season competition, providing a positive update ahead of the Lakers’ opening game.
When asked about the excitement and expectations surrounding the new season, Doncic maintained that his approach remains unchanged.
“Excited to start playing,” he calmly replied. “Nothing new, I’m always very excited.”
