After Stephen Curry accepted a smaller contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, head coach Steve Kerr couldn’t help but admire his leadership.
The four-time champion committed to a two-year, $116 million contract that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season
Despite being qualified for an extension worth up to $136.7 million, Curry chose to leave approximately $20 million on the table.
Kerr talked about the three-point king taking a pay cut as a means of obtaining better players that could help them remain competitive in caliber.
“He’s very unselfish and understands that this pay cut will allow us next summer to sign better players, more players. We feel like we can still be really competitive, be really good,” Kerr said.
The head tactician also discussed that, going forward, this season has low expectations considering the current roster, but looks forward to next summer.
“We got good young players will have a ton of cap space next summer. We got all our draft picks going forward. These processes are painful. They take a few years. And I think Mike has been brilliant just sort of guiding us to this point. And next summer, all of a sudden, for the first time in forever we’ll have all this cap space and these young players that we like and like all right, we can see the other side,” he added.
The champion coach signed a two-year contract extension with Golden State last May, keeping him through the 2027-28 season.
