Draymond Green believes Michael Porter Jr.’s admission that he lost motivation after being snubbed for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game could affect how teams view him when he eventually enters contract negotiations.
Speaking on The Draymond Green Show, the Golden State Warriors forward discussed Porter’s comments about his motivation during the 2025-26 season and the consequences of not finishing the campaign strongly.
“Because he didn’t finish the year strong, people are just like ‘Oh man, he’s just out there playing on a bad team to make an All-Star game,’” Green said. “Now you’re going to have to play so much better… teams looking to sign him are going to hold this against him in the future.”
Porter’s 2025-26 season was his first with the Brooklyn Nets after spending the first six seasons of his career with the Denver Nuggets. The forward averaged a career-high 24.2 points per game while adding 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 52 games.
He shot 46.3 percent from the field and 36.3 percent from three-point range, while making 3.4 three-pointers per game. Porter also shot a career-best 85.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Porter’s scoring production was a significant increase from his final season in Denver. He averaged 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 77 games during the 2024-25 campaign.
The 28-year-old remains an important part of Brooklyn’s plans as the Nets attempt to move forward with a younger core. Brooklyn finished 20-62 last season but made significant changes during the offseason, including acquiring Julius Randle and selecting Mikel Brown Jr. with the No. 6 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Brown Jr. averaged 18.2 points and 4.7 assists at Louisville and is expected to have a significant role immediately. Brooklyn also has several young players developing alongside Porter, including Noah Clowney, Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Danny Wolf and Ben Saraf.
Porter believes the Nets can make a significant jump in 2026-27, telling N3on that the team could surpass 50 wins if its young players continue developing and the group establishes strong chemistry.
He is also eligible for a contract extension through June 30, 2027. General manager Sean Marks has indicated there is no immediate rush to reach an agreement.
