The Toronto Raptors do not expect Kawhi Leonard’s new contract to affect their ability to negotiate an extension with RJ Barrett, general manager Bobby Webster said.
Asked whether Leonard’s two-year, $115 million extension would have an impact on Barrett’s contract situation, Webster pointed to ownership’s willingness to spend.
“No, I think ownership has been incredibly supportive. So, any time, financially, we want to make a go for it, they’re very supportive,” Webster said.
Barrett, 26, is entering the final season of a four-year, $107 million contract. The Raptors acquired him from the New York Knicks in December 2023, and he has established himself as an important part of Toronto’s rotation since arriving.
Barrett averaged 19.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 57 games during the 2025-26 season, shooting 49.1% from the field. He also shot 33.9% from three-point range and 71.7% from the free-throw line.
His 2025-26 scoring average ranked second on the Raptors behind Brandon Ingram, who was subsequently traded to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of Toronto’s deal for Leonard. Barrett also started all 57 games he played.
Since joining Toronto, Barrett has produced some of the most efficient offensive basketball of his career. In 32 games with the Raptors after arriving during the 2023-24 season, he averaged 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 55.3% from the field.
He followed that with 21.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game in 58 appearances during the 2024-25 season.
Toronto’s decision to retain Barrett would come as the franchise enters a new phase following the Leonard trade. The Raptors completed the blockbuster deal on September 14 after a lengthy NBA investigation delayed its completion, bringing Leonard back to the organization where he won the 2019 championship.
Leonard subsequently agreed to his two-year extension, which begins in the 2027-28 season and includes a player option for the second year.
The Raptors now have a starting group built around Immanuel Quickley, Barrett, Leonard, Scottie Barnes and Jakob Poeltl. Barnes and Leonard are expected to lead a team that went 46-36 last season before losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games in the first round.
