Carmelo Anthony believes the 2008 U.S. Olympic “Redeem Team” would have defeated the legendary 1992 Dream Team in a head-to-head matchup.
The 2008 squad featured a younger generation of NBA stars, and Anthony viewed that advantage as particularly important when comparing the two teams.
While acknowledging that the matchup would be competitive, he was confident about which side would come out on top.
“If we’re catching the ’92 Dream Team with that team, we beat them. I don’t want to say 50 [points], but it’ll be a highly competitive game, but we win the game. We have youth. Those guys were beat up. Larry Bird was on was on the ground, laying down with his leg kicked over a beach towel.”
Anthony specifically pointed to the physical condition of some Dream Team members.
In his view, the 1992 roster had several veteran players who were no longer at their physical peak, while the Redeem Team had youth working in its favor.
He also recalled a different atmosphere surrounding the Dream Team during its Olympic run.
Although Anthony recognized the significance of what was at stake, he felt the players were able to approach the experience in a more relaxed manner.
“Those guys were enjoying themselves. That shit wasn’t serious for them. It was serious as far as the stakes and what was around it. But the guys were old. We would definitely beat that team.”
