Bennedict Mathurin signs a deal with the Pelicans

Bennedict Mathurin has agreed to join the New Orleans Pelicans on a two-year, $16 million contract that includes a player option, according to ESPN.

Mathurin’s representatives approached the Clippers about withdrawing his $8.8 million qualifying offer, allowing him to pursue a more favorable opportunity in New Orleans with additional financial security.

Rather than accepting longer-term offers with more guaranteed money, Mathurin prioritized flexibility and the opportunity to reach unrestricted free agency as early as next summer.

The Pelicans had reportedly pursued Mathurin for more than a year and consider him an important piece of their young core.

The structure of the deal also allows New Orleans to remain below the luxury tax line this season.
